OPINION: Why Highlands Park can lift the MTN8 trophy against SuperSpor

EAST LONDON – In the wake of an action-packed Telkom Knockout Cup Round of 16 which was completed on Tuesday night, the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) has announced draws for the quarter-finals.

Two of the biggest South African clubs could not avoid each other as Kaizer Chiefs are set to face bitter rivals Orlando Pirates in the next stage of the competition dubbed as the league cup.

Amakhosi reached the last Eight through a victory over Benni McCarthy’s Cape Town City on Saturday afternoon in a clash that was decided on penalties at Cape Town Stadium.

On the other hand, the 1995 African champions sealed their passage with a 1-0 win over Stellenbosch FC at home on Saturday evening.

In addition, the shocking result of the day came when reigning champions Baroka FC were downed by newly crowned MTN8 champions SuperSport United 3-2 on penalties in Tshwane on Saturday night.

The reigning PSL champions Mamelodi Sundowns clashed against AmaZulu at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday afternoon, and coach Pitso Mosimane guided his charges to a 5-0 victory at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

On the same afternoon, losing Wafa Wafa finalists in the form of Highlands Park welcomed Black Leopards in Tembisa and finally claimed a 6-5 win on shoot-outs following a goalless stalemate.

Meanwhile, the final match of the opening round saw Chippa United playing hosts to Bloemfontein Celtic in East London and a solitary strike in the name of Lehlogonolo Masalesa was enough for the Chilli Boys to give Zimbabwean coach Norman Mapeza’s debut win in the South African top-flight.

Although the PSL is yet to announce fixture dates, kick-off times and venues of the mouth-watering quarter-final clashes, they will be announced in due course.
