Pearl Thusi has been up in arms on Twitter since last week when a user claimed that she got roles because she is lighter in complexion. The debate on colourism dominated conversations when people like Khanyi Mbau weighed in on it.
The debate turned ugly when South Africa’s very own Bonnie Mbuli tweeted “So when a light-skinned actress complains about the one or two roles they didn’t get coz they weren’t dark enough; I’m like but the part your crying about was being the slave who gets raped and beat up in the thing, people who look like you have never had to be in that position, to begin with”
Pearl Thusi, full name Sithembile Xola Pearl Thusi is a South African actress. She’s known for her role in Hollywood series, Quantico. Pearl responded “You have absolutely no clue which other parts I didn’t get but because it makes you feel better to believe my acting career is working out only because I’m light skinned. And for someone who survived depression and wrote a book about it you sure have love spreading negativity.”
Racism is no child’s play. Unfortunately, skin colours play a huge role in everything that we do. From athletics to the entertainment industry. People have had to defend themselves countless times. Much like the issue of gender but that’s a story for another day.
Some viewers dragged Sho Madjozi into the conversation. Madjozi just arrived back in SA after winning a BET, making her the first black female from Mzansi to win a BET.
