In 2013, Idah Alisha finally married her boyfriend Roy Upton. The two had been together for a long time and Idah was over the moon with joy. She felt that Roy was the main man, her biggest fan. Soon rumours emerged that the two were getting separated. The reason, according to the same rumours, was domestic violence. But years later, Idah has finally opened up in an emotional video about the pain of her short-lived marriage.
Beaten, dragged around, held down and pummeled by the man she loved, she felt heartbroken. She found herself thinking back to her childhood. She said, “I remember there was a time he was standing over me in the same position my dad stood over my mum.”
She opened up about how she felt that the biggest mistake was hiding the pain she felt from the people who actually lived here. She talked about how, at one point, she was convinced that his slaps and beatings were her fault, she was to blame for them.
She talked about one incident when after returning from spending some time with her friends, he lost his patience and became violent towards, as her friends stood there. This was a man, who like typical inflictors if domestic violence, portrayed himself as the perfect man to the rest of the world. Such was the irony if the situation, most of her friends regarded him as “a stand-up guy”. A stand-up guy who abused her behind closed doors and attempted to control every part of her life down to the clothes she wore.
Idah was strong. She knew that this was not what she deserved. And she picked up her bag, left everything behind and walked into a newer, better, and stronger life.
